MEd, MSW, RSW
I’m a Registered Social Worker (RSW) who specializes in supporting children and caregivers as they actualize the skills, insights, and relationships that allow them to lead more peaceful and empowered lives.
I've been supporting children, youth, and their families in various capacities since 2008. I've worked extensively in the private sector as well as at Strides Toronto (Aisling Discoveries) and Surrey Place with children and young people with anxiety, mood and behaviour challenges, emotional dysregulation, and those who are autistic, ADHDers, gifted, and 2e.
I'm a former and reformed Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and have completed a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Toronto, a Master of Education (MEd) from Arizona State University, and training in play therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and attachment-based and developmental approaches. I'm a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW).
My eclectic educational and professional background informs a holistic approach that is grounded, above all else, in a deep respect for and curiosity about children's inner worlds, and a desire to help parents meet themselves and their children with compassion and confidence.
I draw from a variety of frameworks and practices, including attachment theory, mindfulness, Internal Family Systems, play therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Building upon each child's and family’s natural strengths, I create an environment that feels welcoming and collaborative.
I help children better understand themselves and their feelings and support them in developing effective coping strategies. Equipped with increased self-awareness and tools for navigating their complex emotional worlds, children and teens are empowered to take risks and bounce back from challenging events.
I believe that parent involvement in the therapeutic process is invaluable. By offering guidance to caregivers that complements the work being done in their child's sessions, I help ensure that emerging skills and parent-child relationships are nurtured in the home environment. Parents gain a new perspective on what their child is experiencing and learn how to best support their growth.
While I tailor my approach to fit the needs, personalities, and self-identified goals of the particular children and families I'm working with, I commonly support those experiencing difficulty with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, perfectionism, emotion regulation, defiant behaviour, problem solving, attention, impulsivity, anger and irritability, and communication and social skills.
I bring a deep understanding of the principles of learning and behaviour to my work as a therapist. My training in special education informs my practices of identifying tangible goals for skill development and scaffolding challenging tasks, while I maintain a fundamental focus on relationships and an overarching aim to encourage connection and compassion.
CHILD AND YOUTH PSYCHOTHERAPY
I offer psychotherapy for children and teens, particularly those who are struggling with anxiety, mood or behaviour challenges, and emotion regulation issues, and those who are autistic and/or ADHD. My approach incorporates attachment-based strategies, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, play therapy, mindfulness, and other therapeutic and teaching methods.
Therapy for children isn't just about talking. Many children feel most comfortable opening up when engaged in another activity, and reflection is prompted by the creative use of games, art, projects, and role play. As I work with a child in whatever form best suits their personality, I'm always focused on the development of skills that promote resilience, foster healthy, rewarding relationships with self and others, and encourage the creation of meaningful and engaged lives.
CAREGIVER COACHING
I provide coaching and support for parents and caregivers around addressing challenging behaviours, nurturing and repairing family relationships, and helping children develop emotional intelligence. To say that parenting is challenging is an understatement. It is incredibly common to struggle with discipline, establishing and maintaining boundaries, talking about and responding to children's feelings, and to feel self-doubt and anxiety about whether you're getting it "right."
Parent coaching sessions focus on developing a shared framework by which to understand a child’s behaviour and family relationships. Parents are supported in accessing perspective and skills that empower them to connect deeply with their children and navigate challenging moments with confidence and a greater sense of calm.
